On every Jew lies the Mitzva (commandment) to write himself a Sefer Totah.

As written:

"ועתה כתבו לכם את השירה הזאת"
(דברים ל"א, י"ט)

By this the Torah commands on each and every one of us to write himself the Torah, which includes the
"שירת האזינו".

If we are unable to write the Torah ourselves, we can fulfill the Mitzva by ordering a Torah scribe to write it on our behalf.

The price of a Sefer Torah is rather high and the majority of the people lack the sources to finance an entire Torah by themselves. Therefore arose the question: Is it possible to fulfill the Mitzva of writing the Torah as a partnership, when a group of people gather and each one of them donates a certain sum to pay for the writing of the Torah?

As written in the book of : ערוך השולחן והאגרות משה לדעת הרא"ש

If each one of them takes a part in the financing of the Torah, it was as if they all fulfilled the Mitzva and therefore stems the important custom of buying letters in the Torah.
